Summer Reading

As of Friday, it’s officially summer! Why not commit to reading books this summer that improve your relationship with food and your body and keep you feeling great all summer long? Here are some books we love at Mood Balance Nutrition. Check out our favorites!

Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight

By Linda Bacon, PhD

If you love research and evidenced based ideas, this book is for you. Health at Every Size examines how health behaviors are correlated with health outcomes, often independently of body size. Health at every size encourages people of all shapes, sizes, and walks of life to treat themselves well and build a positive relationship with food and exercise.

Body Kindness

By Rebecca Scritchfield, RD

Rebecca Scritchfield takes a no nonsense and fun approach to loving yourself well and holistically approaching wellness. Her focus on self-care and emotional and social well being make her message approachable for all. The book is beautiful to boot, with colorful images and info graphics to remind you of the body kindness principles. If you’ve ever struggled with chronic dieting and self esteem or body image issues, this book is for you!

Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program that Works

By Evelyn Tribole, MS, RD and Elyse Resch, MS, RD, FADA, CEDRD

This is the classic when it comes to non-diet approaches. Whether you’re new to intuitive eating or a seasoned intuitive eater, this read is always a great refresher course. It reminds us of the importance of listening to, honoring, and trusting the body’s physiological cues and also how to identify them in the first place.

The Intuitive Eating Workbook for Teens: A Non-Diet, Body Positive Approach to Building a Healthy Relationship with Food

By Elyse Resch, MS, RD

This workbook is meant specifically for teens to delve into the concepts of intuitive eating and can be a great interactive tool for learning more about listening to one’s body. More exciting than just reading a straight text book, the workbook format helps keep you engaged and practicing the skills in your everyday life.

Podcasts

If books aren’t really your thing, there are also some great podcasts that can help you learn more about honoring your body, ditching diets, and intuitive eating.

Food Psych

With Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, CDN

This podcast delves into intuitive eating with guests like body positive and health at every size advocates who are registered dietitians, psychologists, and other eating disorder specialists. Discussing topics from weight stigma to PCOS to eating disorders, this podcast has something for everyone.

It’s Not About the Food

With Dr. Stefani Reinold, MD, MPH, Board Certified Psychiatrist

This podcast is unique in that it’s recorded by a psychiatrist and a faith-based one at that! For those struggling with eating disorders/disordered eating and grappling with how this impacts their faith, this podcast can offer insight and perspective into achieving recovery.

There are endless resources on intuitive eating, body positivity, ditching diets, and eating disorder recovery out there, these are just a few. But we hope you’ll use some of your downtime this summer to check them out and build a healthier/happier relationship with food.

If you’d like to meet with one of our dietitians to talk more about what this could look like through in person nutrition counseling, please reach out!
