Self Care in Stressful Times

We hope that you and your families are staying healthy and well through these stressful and uncertain times. Between the isolation of being at home all day, the changes in day to day schedules, and the uncertainty of the future, we know that mental health and possibly eating routines may be negatively impacted by COVID-19. We wanted to provide some tips and resources to help regulate eating patterns and help you decrease stress as much as possible.

1). Try to have a flexible but structured schedule that includes self-care activities and breaks away from the computer, TV, news, and social media often throughout the day

2). Set specific meal time and snack times, and make sure to stay hydrated during the day.

3). Use apps like calm or head space for self-guided meditation

4). If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder and having a hard time eating regular meals, consider utilizing the free, virtual meal support group offered by a therapist or dietitian: https://www.instagram.com/covid19eatingsupport/

5). Try free yoga classes for self care: https://www.corepoweryogaondemand.com/keep-up-your-practice

6). Take advantage of the beautiful spring weather and get fresh air while social distancing

Most importantly remember to fuel your body properly. Nutrition is important for stress and immune function. We know there are many advertisements for supplements to enhance immune function, but we recommend exercising caution with these, as many of them are not regulated by FDA and no supplements are proven to “boost” your immune system. Focusing on adequate nourishment, stress reduction, sleep, and physical activity when possible are the best strategies for regulating mood and optimizing body function, including immune function.

Stay safe and well during this difficult time and we hope to see you in person soon!
